Classes

My arm was still numb and limp when I went to bed. Sometime in the middle of the night, it got better, and it was fine when I woke up.

But I would remember that Magus Jeanine had promised to dispel the paralysis before bedtime, and she hadn't done it.

It was during breakfast that Adept Balarta approached and said, "Kia, come to my office after you've finished eating."

"Yes, Adept Balarta."

We finished eating together, and Lenda showed me how to clean up. I washed my things and Eva's. The three of them then walked off to their classes, and I turned back to the dormitory. Adept Balarta didn't answer when I knocked at her door, so I took a seat and waited for her. She arrived a few minutes later, sweeping me into her office in front of her. We took seats on opposite sides of her desk.

"This is your class schedule," she said, sliding a piece of paper. "You arrived mid-term, and you will need to do your best in your classes. Please look it over."

It was complicated. There was one set of classes for the even days of the week and one set for the odd days. I stared.

Back home, we had only attended classes two mornings a week. They wanted me to attend classes six days a week, and other than a break for lunch, classes went from shortly after breakfast until mid-afternoon. I stared in chagrin.

This morning I had Introduction to Magic Theory and Modern Ordeen History. In the afternoon I would have World Geography followed by Tutoring with Apprentice Becka. Tomorrow I had Writing Composition, A History of Magic, Magical Properties of Plants, and then Tutoring with Magus Philene. There were room numbers listed beside each class as well as the books required for each of them.

"No mathematics?"

"No. You are ahead of the other girls your age in mathematics, and so you will not have any math until the beginning of the next school year in the autumn."

She let me look over the schedule once more.

"Do you have questions?"

"No."

"Can you find the rooms?"

"Yes."

"You will need to collect the books for this morning, and if you need paper and pencils, they are available in the library."

"I got some when I got my books," I said. "I'm late, aren't I?"

"You're expected," she said. "If you have no questions, you better get going."

I found my first class. The door was closed, but I opened it and poked my head in. The instructor was talking, and she didn't notice me until several of the girls turned to look at me.

"Oh, Kia," the instructor said. "Come in." I stepped fully into the room and came to a stop, but the instructor gestured, and I walked to her. "Come on. We don't bite. I am Adept Cardartina." When I drew closer, she put an arm around my shoulders and turned me to face the class. "Class, this is Kia. Some of you have already met her."

I looked out at the class.
